Meaning of Caring Perceived by Nursing Students

Abstract
Caring is the essence and it is the central, unifying domain for the body of knowledge and practice in nursing. But caring is now beginning to emerge as the central focus for nursing research. Therefore systemic investigation of caring is necessary to advance the displine of nursing and to provide qualitative nursing for patient. The purpose of the this study is to research the phenomen of caring by phenomenology approach through nursing student¡¯s caring perception. The subjects were 42 nursing students who had been trained in clinical setting for 3 months. The data were collected from interview that was done by the phenomenological method of Van Kaam. The validity was assured by a docyorate candidate and a professor of nursing. As a result, caring theme perceived by nursing student were 11 categories-helping. respect, genuiness, teaching, warmth, concern, empathy, thrust, comfortableness, hope, love. Noncaring theme perceived by nursing student were 8 categories-nongenuinness, lack of respect, coldness, lack of understanding, nonconcern, lack of explanation, nonhonesty, roughness. This study contributes understanding of the construction of caring and conceptualization of caring. Ultimately this study provide to basic data for qualitative caring behavior in nursing.
